Title Cruel and Unusual Treatment of Fabrics
Publication Year 2000

Volume 1 lays out 20 fabrics that exemplify a boro boro ("raggedy") aesthetic. All have been been subjected to "cruel and unusual" production processes-roasted over burners, dissolved with acid, ripped apart, and generally "mistreated." While the boro boro essay by noted English archaeologist Richard Hodges relates experiences unearthing the "crumbling" world of the past. The book, of course, stays in one piece.
Hardcover; 52 pp, 25 all-colour photos

The Contents is as follows.
BORO BORO
1. ragged, tattered, worn-out, dilapidated
2. in rags, in tatters, in shreds, in ribbons
3. crumbly, brittle, fragile
4. falling (reduced) to pieces, worn to rags (a frazzle), frayed (at the edges)

At present these books comprise six published folios: Boro Boro, Sukè Sukè, Fuwa Fuwa, Shimi Jimi, Kira Kira and Zawa Zawa. Each thematically treats upon a particular quality among Nuno's many fabrics-as suggested by the onomatopoeic Japanese titles-and is illustrated with striking photos of representative textile works along with essays by a unique range of personalities. Technical details are kept to a minimum in these beautifully designed books, so as to let the visuals speak for themselves.
