This book was published as a catalogue of an Exhibition held in 1995.
The English preface says,"Toshusai Sharaku-a world renowned artist born in Japan.His artistic carreer lasted a scant ten months,and after producing 140 prints which later generations have greatly revered,he suddenly disappeared from sight.While his works forgotten some years,with the arrival of 20th century,the German,Julius Kurth rediscovered this fascinating artist,proclaimingthat he should be ranked with Velasquez and Rembrandt as one of the world 's three great portrait artists."
Toshusai Sharaku (active 1794 - 1795) (Japanese: 東洲斎写楽) is widely considered to be one of the great masters of the woodblock printing in Japan. Little is known of him, besides his ukiyo-e prints; neither his true name nor the date of his death are known with any certainty. His active career as a woodblock artist seems to have spanned just ten months, from middle 1794 to early 1795.
