This book was published as a catalogue of an Exhibition held by Tokyo National Museum in 2003.

The English Preface says,"Not only has Zen influenced the very psychology of the JApanese people,but it has also spawned its own sphere of culture and arts.
The building of the Kencjhoji temple in Kamakura in 1253 serves as a banvhmark for the entry of Chinese Zen Buddhism into Japan.Once Hojo Tokiyori,the fifth regent of the Kamakura military goverment ,invited the Chinese priest Lanxi Daolomg to be the head of the Kenchoji temple in Kamakura,the foreign culture that accopanied the introduction of Zen Buddhism flowed into the capital of warriers.Zen then became a current spreading thoroughout the entire country.
The 750 year anniversary of the founding of Kenchoji is a welcome opportunity to offer this exhibition ,presenting to the public the multiplicity of the artworks based in Kamakura.This is the first such exhibition to offer such a broad range of artworks ,and there may never be another opportunity to see many of these artworks. "
