This is the 7th volume of a series 'Ukiyoe compendium'(total 17 volumes), titled 'Sharaku'.
Toshusai-Syarakuis a mystery Ukiyoe artist whose birthplace or date is yet unknown. Nor is it clear why he continued to make his works public only between May in 1794 and Janurary if the next year and why there are no works of his dated after this brief period.
This volume contains 64 color photos and approx 200 B&W photos of his works and some of other painter. Page 114-end comments of his works
Ukiyo-e, "pictures of the floating world", is a genre of Japanese woodblock prints (or woodcuts) and paintings produced between the 17th and the 20th centuries, featuring motifs of landscapes, the theatre and pleasure quarters. It is the main artistic genre of woodblock printing in Japan.
