This is the 5th volume of a series 'Ukiyoe compendium'(total 17 volumes), titled 'Utamaro'.
Kitagawa Utamaro (1753 - 1806) was a Japanese printmaker and painter, and is considered one of the greatest artists of woodblock prints (ukiyo-e). He is known especially for his masterfully composed studies of women, known as bijinga. He also produced nature studies, particularly illustrated books of insects.
This volume contains 63 color photos and approx 200 B&W photos of his works and some of other painter.

Ukiyo-e, "pictures of the floating world", is a genre of Japanese woodblock prints (or woodcuts) and paintings produced between the 17th and the 20th centuries, featuring motifs of landscapes, the theatre and pleasure quarters. It is the main artistic genre of woodblock printing in Japan.
